What's the problem?
|
What's happening now?
|
WA has refused to join the rest of Australia in signing up to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, saying that they have a proven track record which means that they can run a better scheme than the federal NDIS.
But there are key differences that haven't been addressed and disabled people and their families and peak disability organisations have not been involved in developing or even shown the final 'model'. This scheme is for us and it should be by us - we have to live with the consequences. Draft legislation is being drafted without the involvement of those who it will affect the most and once the bilateral agreement is signed, there is no turning back. We need to act now. |
On December 2, 2016, the WA and Federal Governments announced that they have commenced negotiations for a WA run and administered scheme and would adopt a state run model.
They've agreed on eleven 'elements' - stipulations by the Federal government, which includes the condition that any 'savings' made by decisions around 'lower than expected' packages will be profit-shared by the State and Federal government. The WA Government said that they would choose the 'best bits' out of both trials - but nobody has been shown the proposed model. Not even the WA taxpayer. |
How might we be disadvantaged?
|
What can I do? |
Over the past two years, disabled people and family members have been slowly collecting evidence of the differences between the scheme. It is hard to do, because you only 'know what you know' - if you're in one trial, you don't know about the other. If you've never gotten funding, everything seems wonderful. If you're now receiving less because you had good support, everything will seem worse.
But there is evidence that under the WA NDIS, disabled people's choices and control are significantly restricted. The scheme might be better for providers and government, but we don't want to be worse off. There's a list of some of the key differences over here - message the #nodisadvantage team over at their page if you want to add to the list. |
You can go and see your local MP - write a letter, book an appointment, make a phone call. Write to a newspaper, call a community meeting, share a post from the #nodisadvantage page. There's a letter writing template and ideas on our 'join the fight' lobbying page here.
You can join in on the conversation with others in real life, at the NDIS in WA Peer Support page here, or at NDIS Grassroots Discussion. Check out our media page to find out what happened at a recent public meeting in Swan View. You can call on your peak disability body to ask them what they are doing to represent your interests or talk to others about how you can have your voice heard right now. |
